CONTACT & ABOUT

When I saw the travel book 1001 Places to Visit Before You Die, it inspired me to find one place that I can visit a thousand times. Luckily such a place is just a short drive away in Cape Town, a working harbour, popular tourist attraction with huge shopping malls, restaurants,  hotels, two dry-docks, office buildings and a new art gallery (Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa).

The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) is just a short boat ride away on a canal connecting the Waterfront to the city.

So, for the last ten years plus I have visited the V&A Waterfront once a week and, I didn’t count, but it is likely more than five hundred times.

It isn’t the only place I take my camera for a walk. Stellenbosch, where I have my home, features sometimes and I go to Hermanus to watch the whale watchers in season. Some other places that feature, in no particular order: Kommetjie, Kalk Bay, Franschhoek and Simons Town.

I have a strict rule to only take pictures of objects that reflect light. Some of the people in my pictures are nearly invisible to the average tourist. They sweep, wash, serve, deliver, carry, paint and guard to maintain and build the backdrop for visitors.

I am Like a wildlife photographer but without the SUV, camouflage or insect repellent. The Waterfront landscape change all the time and many pictures are of things that isn’t there any more. The old swing bridge was recently replaced, all the scaffolding is removed, posters come and go. Over the years the number of visitors that spend their time looking at phones increased dramatically.

Enjoy the pictures. I welcome your comments.
